Berkeley Repertory Theatre Announces Three-City Tour of Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter

Award-winning actress Anna Deavere Smith to perform excerpts of her one-woman show in Stockton, Davis, and Klamath

Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announces that it will present a three-city Northern California tour of Anna Deavere Smith’s Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter, a one-woman show about the school-to-prison pipeline. Following a critically acclaimed three-week run at Berkeley Rep’s Roda Theatre, Smith will return to communities she visited during her research for the Pipeline Project to present excerpts of monologues from Notes from the Field. She will share her learnings and encourage dialogue and action to address the school-to-prison pipeline. The tour will also serve as an opportunity to spur youth within those communities to take action around racial inequities in the school system.

Anna Deavere Smith Participates in White House Conference to Rethink School Discipline

Superintendents, principals, and teachers gather to discuss solutions to school-to-prison pipeline

After an exuberant reception from critics and audiences alike for her performance in Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter, playwright, actor, and educator Anna Deavere Smith today takes a break from her one-woman show currently playing at Berkeley Rep to participate in “Rethink Discipline,” a conference at the White House hosted by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice. Smith joins teams of superintendents, principals, and teachers from across the country (including Oakland Unified School District) for a day-long conference to discuss ways to create positive school climates and ways to implement effective discipline practices.

Directed by Obie Award-winner Leah C. Gardiner and featuring music by Bay Area favorite, jazz musician Marcus Shelby, this limited engagement starts previews Saturday, July 11, and runs through Sunday, August 2, 2015, at Berkeley Rep’s, Roda Theatre. This July Berkeley Repertory Theatre is proud to present Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter, a special presentation created, written by, and starring playwright, actor, and educator Anna Deavere Smith. Smith garnered a National Humanities Medal from President Obama in 2012 and a MacArthur Award for her incisive and astounding theatrical investigations—from racial tension with law enforcement (Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992) to the deficiencies in our health care system in Let Me Down Easy.
