Berkeley Rep Launches Summer Lab with 40 of Nation’s Top Artists

13 innovative projects are invited to The Ground Floor, a new R&D facility for theatre

This July, 40 of the nation’s most prominent and promising writers, directors, and composers will be in residence at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in an extraordinary new laboratory for collaboration. Today, the renowned nonprofit announced 13 selections for the inaugural summer lab at The Ground Floor, Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. During an intense four-week period, dozens of artists will live, dine, create, and collaborate at the Theatre’s new campus in West Berkeley. Seed money for these activities is provided by a $1 million grant from the James Irvine Foundation’s Artistic Innovation Fund and a $750,000 grant from ArtPlace.

Tony Award-winning theatre launches Center for the Creation and Development of New Work

Today, Berkeley Repertory Theatre announced a bold new initiative designed to raise the bar on its already successful record of artistic innovation. The Tony Award-winning nonprofit is launching The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. An extraordinary laboratory for collaboration, this new program seeks to enhance and expand the process by which Berkeley Rep makes theatre. Think of it as an incubator for theatrical start-ups or a top-notch R&D facility for artists. The Ground Floor will promote cross-pollination among artists and champion the spirit of innovation inherent to Berkeley and the Bay Area. Get in on The Ground Floor!

Madeleine Oldham · Director

Madeleine is the director of The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work and the Theatre’s resident dramaturg. She oversees commissioning and new play development, and dramaturged the world premiere productions of The House that will not Stand, Passing Strange, and In the Next Room (or the vibrator play), among others. As literary manager and associate dramaturg at Center Stage in Baltimore, she produced the First Look reading series and headed up its young audience initiative. Before moving to Baltimore, she was the literary manager at Seattle Children’s Theatre, where she oversaw an extensive commissioning program. She also acted as assistant and interim literary manager at Intiman Theatre in Seattle. Madeleine served for four years on the executive committee of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and has also worked with ACT (Seattle), Austin Scriptworks, Crowded Fire, the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, the Kennedy Center, New Dramatists, Playwrights Center, and Portland Center Stage.

Sarah Williams · Associate Managing Director

Sarah was appointed the role of associate managing director, taking over for Karena Fiorenza Ingersoll, now general manager of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In her role, Williams will work closely with Managing Director Susan Medak and manage The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep’s Center for the Creation and Development of New Work, as well as special events, and will represent the Theatre to various business and cultural organizations. Williams comes to Berkeley Rep from New Haven, Connecticut where she most recently served as associate managing director of Yale Repertory Theatre. Other positions held at Yale include company manager for Yale Repertory Theatre and Yale Institute for Music Theatre. Prior to Yale, Williams held positions with the Huntington Theatre Company and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She currently serves as a member of the LORT Recruitment sub-committee, part of the LORT Diversity Initiative. She holds a BA in Theatre Arts from Boston College and an MFA in Theater Management from Yale School of Drama.
