Join us for our monthly Teen Council meetings to plan upcoming events and discuss theatre with professional guest speakers.

Teen council meetings include guest speakers from Berkeley Rep’s professional staff as well as actors and designers from the award-winning shows that are part of each season. teen night: eat, talk and see great plays with the teen council

Teen Night gives Bay Area teens the opportunity to attend the first preview of a Berkeley Rep play for an extremely discounted price, with dinner and a behind-the-scenes workshop before the show.

Next Teen Night

  • Sunday, September 19, 2010: Compulsion
    (R.S.V.P. deadline: Thursday, September 16)
  • Written by Rinne Groff / Directed by Oskar Eustis
  • Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin makes his Berkeley Rep debut as Sid Silver, a man obsessed. When he learns about a young girl named Anne Frank and her extraordinary diary, Silver makes it his mission to ensure her tale is heard. But is the manuscript a work of art? A cultural treasure? Once publishers and producers get involved, it becomes “a very valuable product”—and his good intentions prove to be his undoing. Acclaimed director Oskar Eustis returns to the Bay Area with Rinne Groff’s Compulsion, a kaleidoscopic collision of history and culture inspired by the life of Meyer Levin and commissioned by Berkeley Rep. A moving story that combines stellar acting with marvelous marionettes, this world-premiere production takes us on a journey from passion to Compulsion.

The event begins at 5:30pm at the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, 2071 Addison Street, one block from the downtown Berkeley BART station.

The cost for the evening, which includes dinner, an interview and discussion with a member of the creative team and a ticket to the show is $10. This can be paid by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, check or with cash at the door. Even if you choose to pay with cash at the event, you must R.S.V.P. to have a ticket held in your name.

We invite all interested high school students to participate in Teen Night.

To learn more or to R.S.V.P., call Teen Council at 510 647–2974 or e-mail teencouncil@berkeleyrep.org.

Upcoming Teen Nights

teen theatre conference

The Teen Theatre Conference was designed to create an open forum for students from different high-school drama programs to exchange ideas, network and strengthen the teen theatre community. In past conferences, participants were able to focus in one of five areas of concentration, including directing, acting, design, journalism in the arts and producing.

Past conferences have been divided into two parts: the first half of the day was spent studying with theatre professionals in their chosen area of concentration, while the second half allowed participants to work in small teams and produce a short piece of theatre.

More information about this year’s conference will be coming soon!

theatre scene

Here in the Bay Area, we happen to have some of the best theatre right in our backyard and it’s time to take advantage of this resource! In our Theatre Scene program, we travel as a group to see productions at Bay Area theatres, often at a discounted price. On the night of the performance, teens meet at the Berkeley Rep and travel together to see each show. In addition to our regular theatre attendance at Berkeley Rep through Teen Night, this is an opportunity for teens to support the theatre community and learn about the breadth and diversity the local arts scene has to offer. Past Theatre Scene shows have included Spring Awakening, Angry Black White Boy and RENT. Possible upcoming shows include Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, In the Heights and Caucasian Chalk Circle.

If you are interested in participating in Theatre Scene, e-mail teencouncil@berkeleyrep.org. or call 510 647–2974.
