The young men in Girlfriend find each other in a small Nebraska town circa 1993. Here in the Bay Area, in the early 21st century, we’re fortunate to have a number of resources available to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. Below is a sampling, and each group provides further resource listings.
Bay Area Gay-Straight Alliance Network (BAGSA Network)

- This youth-led organization works to empower youth activists fighting homophobia in schools. The GSA Network is dedicated to helping youth all over the Bay Area start Gay-Straight Alliances, keep them going and become active in the fight to end homophobia.
The Center

- The Center, located in San Francisco’s Castro District, provides a vast array of programs and services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) people, their friends and families.
GLBT Student Pride Network

- The purpose of the GLBT Student Pride Network is to provide an online resource and social networking site for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students, their allies and others who are interested in GLBT issues.
Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center (LYRIC)

- San Francisco-based LYRIC’s mission is to build community and inspire positive social change through education enhancement, career trainings, health promotion and leadership development with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth, their families and allies of all races, classes, genders and abilities.
Live Out Loud

- This nonprofit organization is dedicated to inspiring and empowering LGBT youth by connecting them with successful LGBT professionals in their community.
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)

- Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is a national nonprofit organization with more than 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced and serviced by the PFLAG National Office, located in Washington, D.C.

- The PFLAG Oakland-East Bay chapter meets in Berkeley on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
The Point Foundation

- A national LGBT scholarship organization, the Point Foundation provides financial support, mentoring, leadership training and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
